Is that mole cancerous? Your smartphone can figure it out

You are standing before a mirror when you notice a not-so-subtle change in your skin; a mole has suddenly grown bigger than the last time you observed it. It appears parched and crusty, surrounded by jagged edges and tinted with a peculiar shade of blue. You know something is wrong, but you aren't sure about what to do, and you begin to wonder whether your discovery came a little too late. Right then, the fear of the unknown starts to consume you.

The abovementioned symptoms show how a cancerous mole can look as soon as it progresses. Melanoma, carcinoma, and other kinds of skin cancer affect 2 million Americans each year, but millions of lives have been saved through self-checks. Unlike most forms of cancer, your chances of surviving skin cancer are very high: the survival rate stands at an encouraging 95 percent, according to the National Cancer Institute.

Fortunately, you can monitor your skin health regularly with a preventive tool that comes conveniently in your smartphone. As reported by Forbes.com , a U.K.-developed mobile application called Skin Analytics allows you to capture images of your skin and keep a photographic profile to help you take note of changes to any mole or lesion. Although the app does not exactly diagnose, the saved photographic profile can be forwarded to your doctor for his perusal. Such information can help the specialist better assess whether or not the lesion typifies a cancerous growth, and if so, which type of treatment will best tackle the disease at its present stage.

Meanwhile, a more sophisticated diagnosis app for iOS users is being developed in University of Houston, according to MobileHealthNews.com. While it is in clinical trial, the app holds promise as it is able to correctly detect melanoma 95 percent of the time.

Dr. Dan Taheri heads LA Laser and Skin Center, and has co-authored a book titled “Practical Management of Skin Cancer.” Visit this website to know more about the wide range of measures to detect, treat, and prevent all types of skin cancers.

Acne laser treatment: How it works

Virtually everyone has suffered fr0m acne at some point in their lives. Acne occurs when glands in the skin’s pores get congested by too much oil, dirt, and bacteria. Clogged pores become inflamed and infected, causing redness and swelling.

Acne not only yields unsightly scars and marks, it also negatively affects one’s self-image and self-confidence. Many types of treatments have been proposed to remedy varying degrees of acne. For severe cases, dermatologists suggest laser treatment as a possible option.

The use of laser for treatment was discovered by accident; originally used to minimize wrinkles and scars, dermatologists found out that it also clears the skin of acne. Today, laser is commonly implemented when traditional forms of acne treatment prove ineffective.

Acne laser treatment works by blanketing the skin with oxygen as light pulsates through the skin. Acne-causing bacteria is sensitive to oxygen, and are destroyed when it comes into contact with the elements. The treatment is effective enough to be a non-frequent procedure; one appointment is enough to control acne growth for a few months.

Laser treatment should only be chosen as a last resort, when other acne treatments have been tried to no avail. A consultation with a dermatologist is in order before proceeding with any form of acne treatment.

Dr. Dan Taheri currently serves as the chief dermatologist and Mohs surgeon at the prestigious LA Laser and Skin Center. For more information on acne treatment and other dermatological issues, visit the company’s official website.

Going skin deep: Spotting skin disease early

Skin care is not a purely superficial matter, and seeing a dermatologist shouldn’t solely be for the purpose of indulging vanity. Many skin conditions can range from the mildly discomforting or embarrassing to the debilitating and painful, and seemingly minor or unusual blemishes may in turn be symptoms of severe, life threatening diseases.

Patients are recommended to have particularly suspicious or unusual blemishes or moles examined by dermatologists for further analysis so that their nature can be fully understood. Though not all of these troubling features turn out to be the early stages of cancer, the only way of determining for sure is to have them examined by seasoned dermatologists like Dr. Dan Taheri.

Preludes to potentially dangerous conditions, often taking the form of unusual projections or growths, can sometimes be overlooked, jeopardizing the life of the person in the process. Signs of trouble include scaling, rough growths commonly known as actinic keratosis (which may turn out to be pre-cancer lesions) and unusual moles, which can develop into melanomas.

Moles are particularly tricky as while most are benign, their sudden appearances or a noticeable change in their structure, such as unusual growth, sensitivity, and bleeding, could be signs that it needs medical attention.

Keeping a watchful eye on seemingly superficial skin symptoms that could point to skin disease is a vital part of caring for skin health. Early detection can keep latent skin diseases from getting ugly.

Dr. Dan Taheri is a nationally recognized surgeon and dermatologist who heads LA Laser and Skin Care. For more on the importance of early detection of skin disease, visit this website.
